The year 2017 marked the 115th anniversary of Alexander Luria's (1902-1977) birth, and the 40th anniversary of his death. To commemorate the life and scientific achievements of this world-renowned psychologist, the Yeltsyn Ural Federal University and the Moscow Lomonosov State University collaborated with the Russian Psychological Association (RPA), the American Psychological Association (APA), the Tomsk State University, the Kemerovo Federal University, the International Society of Applied neuropsychology (ISAN), the International Society of Cultural-historical Activity Research (ISCAR), the Institute of Vygotsky and the Association of Relational-Historic Psychology in Portugal, the Center for Integrating Neuropsychology and Psychology (CINAPSI) in San Paulo, the Moscow Research Center of Developmental Neuropsyсhology, and the Irkutsk Research Center of Family Health and Human Reproduction.

The role of language in Neuropsychological rehabilitation of patients with developmental disorders

Abstract:

Inspired by Luria’s research, this paper aims to underline the basic function of language in clinical neuropsychological rehabilitation when inserting this novel form of behavior and mental structure.  According to Luria (1966) through the word you can change the natural strength of stimuli, i.e. modify the well-known force of "Pavlov’s rule ". Our experimental research aims to show that spontaneous progress in development may be modified when initiating this organizer which affects impulses and motor reactions. To illustrate the decisive influence of language in shaping and structuring perception, attention, memory, planning and action, a sample composes of five Asperger children and five children with hyperactivity were given tasks using the “Piano-Card” as instrument (Quintino Aires, 2016), and employing different levels of difficulty with or without the support of language.  We used the Observer Software Program to collect and analyze observational records of performance understood as data to be classified according to formerly specified codes.
